Final Destination (2000)

Final Destination" is a 2000 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wong, with a screenplay by Wong, Glen Morgan, and Jeffrey Reddick, based on a story by Reddick. It is the first installment in the Final Destination film series and features Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, and Tony Todd in key roles. The story follows a teenager, played by Sawa, who has a chilling premonition of a catastrophic plane explosion. After he and several classmates leave the aircraft before the disaster strikes, they soon realize that Death is still pursuing them, claiming their lives one by one.

The film originated as a spec script written by Reddick for The X-Files, intending to secure a TV agent. However, a New Line Cinema colleague encouraged him to adapt it into a feature-length movie. Wong and Morgan, writing partners from The X-Files, took interest in the script, leading Wong to make his directorial debut. The movie was filmed primarily in New York City and Vancouver, with additional scenes shot in Toronto and San Francisco.

Released on March 17, 2000, Final Destination was a box office success, earning $10 million during its opening weekend. Despite receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, the film won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and Best Performance by a Younger Actor for Sawa. Its success led to the creation of a media franchise, including five sequels, novels, and comic books. The first sequel, Final Destination 2, premiered on January 31, 2003.
